The Platinum Card® from American Express offers two extended warranty programs: One for New York State, and one for the rest of the United States. Coverage extends for one additional year beyond the manufacturer’s warranty of five years or less.
However, the New York State program limits coverage to a period matching what is offered in the manufacturer’s warranty if it is less than one year. Both programs limit coverage to $10,000 per covered purchase and $50,000 per year.
The American Express® Gold Card provides the same extended warranty programs as the issuer’s Platinum Card. The extended warranty covers losses of up to $10,000 per purchase and $50,000 per year for multiple losses.
You get one additional year of coverage added to a manufacturer’s warranty of five years or less. For New York residents, the extended warranty matches manufacturer’s warranties of one year or less.
The American Express Green Card® has the same top-tier extended warranty arrangements as the issuer’s Platinum and Gold cards. This means you get an extra year of coverage on top of that provided by manufacturers’ warranties of up to five years.
If you live in New York, the extended coverage doubles that of manufacturers’ warranties of less than one year. The coverage limits are $10,000 per covered item and $50,000 per year.

No surprises here — the Chase Freedom Unlimited® card has the same extended warranty plan as those for the Sapphire cards. That’s one additional year of coverage when the manufacturer’s warranty is three years or less. Your coverage limits are $10,000 for an item and $50,000 for the account.
Note that coverage is secondary to any existing extended warranty or service contract that you have purchased. Only repairs completed by an authorized facility are covered.
Best Citi Cards for Extended Warranties
Citi removed extended warranty benefits from its only two cards to have the benefit — The Citi Costco cards — on January 22, 2023.
How Do Extended Warranties Work?
The reason you exercise a warranty is that you’ve encountered a covered loss on a purchased item. “Loss” is a general term meaning malfunction of the purchased item that requires repair, replacement, or reimbursement.
Typically, the following conditions must be met before an extended warranty takes effect:
- The credit card must offer an extended warranty.
- You must make the purchase with the credit card or with points from the credit card.
- The purchase must be covered by the warranty. This usually means property used for your household, for your business, or as a gift.
- A covered loss must match the coverage offered by the original manufacturer’s warranty.
- The loss is covered only until the extended warranty expires.
- Any exceptions in the original manufacturer’s warranty also apply, as well as any additional exceptions specified by the card issuer. Typical exceptions include loss due to physical damage, alterations, improper use, power surges, natural disaster, and many more. Also, certain items won’t be covered and might include living things, consumables, perishables, land, motorized vehicles, or buildings.
- The extended warranty may exclude items purchased as inventory or for resale, professional use, or commercial use.
- The extended warranty may exclude items covered by an unconditional satisfaction guarantee.
- The issuer will usually set a maximum coverage amount per item and limit the coverage to an amount no greater than the original purchase price. There may be an aggregate coverage limit on multiple claims.
- If the item is to be repaired, those repairs must be valid, reasonable, and executed by an authorized repair facility.
- Certain costs may be excluded, such as shipping, installation, handling, rebates, and other service fees.
- You can’t assign the extended warranty to another person.
- You might lose coverage if you cancel the credit card or use the purchased item in the commission of a crime.
If you need to file a claim, the general procedure is for you to contact the card issuer, usually by phone, within a set period following the loss. The card issuer will ask you to fill out a claim notice and to provide proof of loss by the specified deadline.
This proof of loss may include the original purchase receipt, a copy of the original manufacturer’s warranty and/or any purchased service contract, a photograph of the item, and/or a completed repair estimate form.
If you’ve properly jumped through all the hoops, you should receive your claimed benefit within a defined period. Payment may be capped if you were paying for your purchase in installments.
Which Credit Card Has the Best Extended Warranty?
Some issuers have removed or reduced this benefit over the years, but those that still offer it all offer similar coverage. American Express, Bank of America, and Chase still offer solid extended warranty protection on select cards.
Issuer | Warranty Period | Coverage Limits |
---|---|---|
Amex | 1 Year, Not to Exceed 5-Year Manufacturer Warranty | $10,000 per Item $50,000 per Account |
Bank of America | Matches Manufacturer Warranty Up to 1 Year | $10,000 per Item $50,000 per Account |
Chase | 1 Year, Not to Exceed 3-Year Manufacturer Warranty | $10,000 per Item $50,000 per Account |
Citi | N/A (Discontinued in 2023) | N/A |
Discover | N/A (Discontinued in 2018) | N/A |
Visa Signature | Matches Manufacturer Warranty Up to 1 Year | $10,000 per Item $50,000 per Account |
The least impressive extended warranty programs involve manufacturer warranties of less than one year. That is, the extended warranties of cards like the Bank of America® Customized Cash Rewards credit card and Capital One Venture Rewards Credit Card only double the number of covered months for short warranties.
More specifically, these cards will only add three months to three-month manufacturer warranties. That’s pretty puny when other cards always provide at least one additional year of coverage.
We should point out that New Yorkers who use Amex cards with extended warranties also have to put up with the matching extended warranty coverage when the manufacturer’s warranty is less than one year. The other 49 states receive a full year of extended coverage no matter how short the manufacturer’s warranty.
Do All Amex Cards Offer Extended Warranties?
American Express overhauled its benefit programs on January 1, 2020. The result is the addition of trip interruption and cancellation coverage to premium Amex cards but the removal of extended warranty coverage from Amex consumer cards that charge no annual fee.
The three Amex cards we reviewed here, such as The Platinum Card® from American Express, continue to offer the standard extended warranty program. However, the standard program scaled back the additional coverage period from two years to one.
This illustrates a larger point: Credit card issuers are forever tinkering with the benefits they offer. With little notice this year, a card like the American Express® Green Card shed benefits, such as returns protection, whereas The Platinum Card® from American Express retained this benefit.
In other words, you need to stay on top of benefit changes, not only by the issuer but also by individual cards.
So why do credit card issuers do this? Well, benefits are expensive, and cards need to generate enough revenue to make them profitable.
Issuers constantly assess their costs and evaluate which benefits are valued most by their customers. They may have to sacrifice some less popular benefits to save highly valued ones.
Ranking Methodology
Our list of the best credit cards for extended warranties evaluates the individual policies for credit card issuers that still offer extended warranty protection. The rankings are based on coverage limits, warranty terms, the claims process, and overall cardholder satisfaction.
