Although most of us prefer to have a range of options, research suggests that too many options can put our brains into overload, making us nearly incapable of coming to a decision. The modern credit card market is a perfect example of too much choice, with everyone from banks and credit unions to our favorite retailers offering credit cards from which to choose.

To help cut through the field of options, we’ve put together a quick quiz that can direct you toward the right card in just three simple questions. Starting with:

What is your primary credit card objective?

Earn Rewards IconFees IconBuild Credit IconBusiness Purchases Icon

(Select Your Answer)

Earning Credit Card Rewards

Arguably the most compelling reason to shop by credit card (beyond the greater security, that is), credit card rewards are basically like a universal rebate that helps you save on every purchase.

The first step to finding the right rewards credit card is to determine what type of rewards you’re most likely to use; after all, rewards do you little good if they go unredeemed.

Cash back is a great solution for those who want simple rewards with a consistent value. Rewards points and miles, on the other hand, can offer greater earnings rates at redemption, but typically only when redeemed for travel.

What type of rewards are you most likely to use?

Cash Back Rewards Cards

Once you know you want to earn cash back rewards, you’ll need to decide how you want to earn your cash back. This decision will come down to how much effort you want to put into maximizing your cash back rewards.

If you want to keep your cash back simple, you can go with an unlimited cash back rewards card that provides the same rate on every purchase.

If you want to maximize your cash back rewards earnings, you can select a card (or several) that provides bonus cash back rewards for purchases in common categories like groceries and restaurants.

Do you want simple rewards or to maximize your earnings?

(Select Your Answer)

Unlimited Cash Back Rewards Cards

Congratulations! You’ve chosen to go with an unlimited cash back rewards card without bonus categories.

With any of these cards, you’ll receive 1.5% cash back on every new purchase, an introductory APR deal good on new purchases and balance transfers, and no annual fee.

Given that these cards offer many of the same benefits, simply pick your favorite issuer and/or network and apply now.

Bonus Category Cash Back Rewards Cards

Congratulations! You’ve chosen to go with a cash back credit card with bonus cash back categories.

The best way to determine which cash back bonus category card to select is to consider where you spend the most money.

If your spending varies throughout the year, try a card with rotating categories. If you always spend a lot on gas, dining, or groceries, choose a card with bonuses for those purchases.

Travel Rewards Cards

For the frequent traveler — or simply those who wish to be — travel rewards credit cards can be a treasure trove of freebies as well as nearly priceless perks.

Getting the most out of your points or miles card will come down to how much work you want to put into maximizing your earnings. Flexible miles cards, for example, give you a flat per-mile redemption value on any flight, any time.

In general, rewards points are much more versatile than most miles and can unlock a lot of value when redeemed wisely. That said, redeeming points for high-value travel will take more work and you may end up at the mercy of availability for certain redemption options.

Do you want flexible flat-rate miles or versatile points you can maximize?

Flexible Miles Cards with Flat-Rate Value

Congratulations! You’ve chosen to go with a flexible travel miles rewards credit card.

With these travel rewards cards, you’ll earn unlimited miles on every purchase and can redeem those miles for statement credit toward any qualifying travel-related purchases.

While flights, hotels, and car rentals will qualify as travel for most cards, each issuer will have its own classifying for what qualifies as a “travel-related expense,” so you can use that distinction to pick a specific card.

Saving on Credit Card Fees

If credit cards have one primary downside, it’s most likely the myriad fees they tend to charge. Some cards charge a fee simply for having them, typically in the form of an annual fee.

Carrying a balance on your card can also come with fees, namely interest rate fees. Averaging around 16%, interest charges can add up quickly.

And then there are the transaction fees, like foreign transaction fees, which can cost as much as 3% to 5% of each purchase in another currency. Thankfully, the right card can help you save on nearly every credit card fee.

On what type of fees do you want to save?

Annual Fee Icon Interest Fee IconForeign Transaction Fee Icon

(Select Your Answer)

Credit Cards with No Annual Fees

Although paying an annual fee for some cards can be well worth paying it — either for their high rate of return on rewards or for their secondary benefits — you can get a good deal on plenty of awesome cards for which you don’t need to pay an annual fee.

As with most things in the consumer finance world, of course, the better your credit, the more options you’ll have available to you. However, you do still have some options for annual-fee-free credit cards even with fair or even bad credit.

Into which credit score range do you fall?

Good Credit IconFair Credit IconBad Credit Icon

(Select Your Answer)

Credit Cards with No Annual Fees for Good Credit

Congratulations! You’ve chosen to go with a card with no annual fee for good-credit consumers.

With good credit, you’ll have a wide range of credit card options that won’t charge an annual fee but will still offer solid rewards.

Most no-fee credit cards will offer cash back rewards, rather than points or miles, so choosing from the fee-free options will come down to deciding whether you want unlimited cash back rewards or bonus rewards in rotating categories.

Credit Cards with No Interest Fees

If left to accrue, credit card interest fees — the cost of carrying a balance — can turn even a modest purchase into an expensive buy. And while interest fees can be avoided by simply paying your balance in full each billing cycle, that’s not always an option. That’s where introductory 0% APR offers can come in handy.

Whether you want to avoid interest on an upcoming purchase or reduce the amount of interest you’re paying on a current balance with a transfer, there’s likely a card that can help you beat the interest fees.

What type of interest fees do you want to avoid?

And since you can earn rewards on your interest-free purchases, the type of rewards you earn can be a good way to pick a specific card.

Credit Cards with No Foreign Transaction Fees

Foreign transaction fees are charged to cover the cost of converting currency from US dollars to and/or from a foreign currency. These fees are charged on every card purchase, and they can turn an already pricey vacation into a downright expensive one.

The simplest way to avoid foreign transaction fees is to use a card that doesn’t charge them. Happily, there are a number of options available to qualified consumers.

Although Discover and American Express are certainly expanding their reach every year, Visa and Mastercard are the undeniable leaders in global acceptance, with most merchants accepting at least one of the two networks.

Which credit card network do you prefer to use abroad?

Building Credit with Credit Cards

Whether you’re just starting on your consumer credit journey, or you’ve taken a few wrong turns and need to get back on track, responsible credit card use can be a good way to build — or rebuild — your credit history and scores.

The biggest problem most consumers with low (or no) credit scores will face when trying to get a credit card to build credit is being approved in the first place. Credit card issuers, like any lenders, dislike risk, and low credit scores tend to indicate high credit risk.

The best way to ensure you’re approved for a credit card when you apply is to choose a card designed for your specific credit type. Those consumers with no or limited credit histories will often qualify for slightly better cards than those applicants with bad credit.

Which best describes your current credit situation?

Credit Cards for Consumers with No/Limited Credit

It takes at least six months of credit history to have enough information for a FICO Score to be calculated, which is the metric used by most lenders to determine your credit risk.

The world of no/limited credit is one with two main types of credit newbies: students — and everyone else. A number of credit card issuers offer cards specifically designed for students that tend to come with better perks than typical start cards.

Are you currently (or about to be) a college student?

Credit-Building Credit Cards for Students

Congratulations! You’ve chosen to go with a student credit card for no/limited credit.

Most student credit cards will offer some type of purchase rewards, usually cash back. They’ll also often come with secondary benefits just for students, including late payment forgiveness or good grades statement credits.

Credit-Building Credit Cards for Everyone

Congratulations! You’ve chosen to go with a general consumer credit card for no/limited credit.

While students tend to get the best perks when starting out, there are still a number of solid entry-level cards available to those who need to establish and build their credit history.

While you may need to pay an annual fee for purchase rewards, fee-free options are also available.

Credit Cards for Consumers with Bad Credit

Although it takes months to years to build up a good credit score, it only takes one or two delinquent payments to wind up with a bad one. And the worse your score becomes, the fewer and more expensive your credit card options become.

In general, bad-credit consumers will need to go with an unsecured subprime credit card or a secured credit card. While unsecured subprime cards won’t require a deposit, they often come with high fees and APRs.

Thanks to their deposit, secured credit cards are less risky to the lender, so they frequently offer lower fees and interest rates, and may also come with rewards. Your deposit is completely refundable so long as you don’t default on your credit card balance.

Can you make a refundable deposit to open your account?

Deposit Icon No Deposit Icon

(Select Your Answer)

Secured Credit Cards for Bad Credit

Congratulations! You’ve chosen to go with a secured credit card for bad credit.

To open a secured credit card, you’ll still need to fill out an application and apply like any other card. If approved, you’ll make a refundable deposit that will act as collateral so long as your account remains open and in good standing.

Choosing a secured credit card will likely come down to whether you want a low APR or you want to earn rewards. If you’re likely to carry a balance — which isn’t’ recommended — go for a lower APR. If not, try a rewards card for extra savings while you build your credit score.

While there are a number of options available for bad-credit applicants to find unsecured credit cards, those options will all tend to come with either severe limitations — such as in the case of closed-loop store cards — or particularly high fees and APRs.

Making Purchases with Business Credit Cards

If the consumer credit card world is an ocean of options, then the business credit cards available these days are at least a good-sized lake, if not a small sea.

Nearly any credit card variation available to consumer cardholders is present in the business card space, with everything from unlimited cash back rewards to bonus-category based travel rewards being offered by multiple issuers.

Indeed, choosing a business credit card quite often will come down to deciding which type of rewards you want to earn — and how you want to earn them.

Do you want your business purchases to earn simple flat-rate rewards or category rewards you can maximize?

Simple IconMaximize Icon

(Select Your Answer)

Flat-Rate Business Rewards Credit Cards

A good choice for busy bosses everywhere, flat-rate rewards cards offer the savings benefits of rewards without the hassle of tracking categories to optimize your earnings.

And, even better, you don’t have to limit yourself to one type of rewards to get the time-saving perks of flat-rate rewards. Options for both cash back and points or miles are available for well-qualified business owners.

What type of rewards are you most likely to redeem?

Cash Back IconPoints/Miles Icon

Flat-Rate Cash Back Business Credit Cards

Congratulations! You’ve chosen to go with a flat-rate cash back rewards business credit card.

With these cards, you’ll earn cash back at the same rate regardless of what you purchase, with no limit on how much cash back you can earn.

While cash back rates may vary, so, too, will annual fees, APRs, and introductory deals, so choose the card with the most useful fringe benefits and protections.

Flat-Rate Points/Miles Business Credit Cards

Congratulations! You’ve chosen to go with a flat-rate points or miles rewards business credit card.

Although flat-rate points or miles cards earn the same amount of rewards regardless of your purchase category, redeeming those rewards may still require a little more work or have more variables than simple cash back.

In particular, some flat-rate miles cards may only allow redemption for travel-related expenses. Flat-rate points rewards cards will tend to have more redemption options, but your per-point value will usually vary based on how you redeem.

Bonus Category Business Rewards Credit Cards

As with consumer rewards credit cards, getting the most value out of your business rewards credit cards will require wise use of bonus category cards.

You can maximize your rewards earnings by choosing a card (or cards) that provides bonus rewards for the business purchases you make most often. For example, if your business goes through a lot of office supplies, you can potentially save big with a card that offers bonus rewards for those purchases.

Credit Cards with Bonus Rewards for Travel

Congratulations! You’ve chosen to go with a business rewards card with bonus rewards for travel purchases.

If travel is a big part of your business, a travel rewards credit card can offer not only a way to save on your flights, hotels, and other travel-related expenses, but also a good source of extra perks and benefits that can make your travel that much more pleasant.

Choosing a bonus travel rewards credit card will likely come down to how much you travel. For moderate travelers, a card that also offers other bonus rewards categories may be better than one that directly caters to travelers alone.
