Card customization has become less common over the years. Some card issuers have removed the option altogether, whereas other banks only allow debit cardholders to customize their cards. Read on to see which issuers still allow custom card designs and on which cards.

Cards For Bad Credit You Can Customize

There are also some subprime card issuers that allow approved cardholders to choose from multiple card designs. The following card is worth considering if your credit score disqualifies you from one of the Discover cards above.

Okay, so the PayPal Prepaid Mastercard® isn’t actually a credit card. But it’s a prepaid card that can be used everywhere Mastercard is accepted and can be obtained without a credit check. You can load money onto this card with cash or through your checking or savings account. Cardholders can choose from five different colors.

Which Credit Cards Can You Customize?

As mentioned above, Discover and select subprime credit card issuers offer personalized card options. Here are the customization rules for other major credit card issuers:

  • American Express now features customization on two of its popular cards, The Platinum Card® — choose among three designs, including the classic Platinum design — and the American Express® Gold Card, where you can choose between the classic gold color or the new rose gold option.
  • Citi does not allow custom credit or debit cards.
  • Capital One and U.S. Bank only offer custom debit card options. Capital One recently discontinued the option to customize its credit cards. Cardholders used to be able to upload their own image or choose from several designs offered by the bank.
  • Wells Fargo offers a Card Design Studio® to existing customers who have select credit and debit cards. “Credit cards not eligible for customization include Propel American Express®, Cash Wise, The Private Bank, and Wells Fargo Advisor cards,” according to Wells Fargo. Eligible cardholders can upload an image or choose from available designs.
  • Chase only allows customization on its pair of Disney co-branded cards. Cardholders can choose from more than 10 Disney character designs upon account opening.
  • Barclays allows customization on select co-branded cards, including its NFL Extra Points Visa® Credit Card, for which applicants can choose their favorite NFL team’s logo as their credit card design.

Some plastic business cards allow customization too — it just depends on the issuer’s capability. It’s a shame more credit card companies don’t offer this benefit, though we can see how offering specially designed cards for every cardholder would be quite the undertaking.

Can You Personalize Your Credit Card?

This depends on the card you have or are thinking about getting.

If you have a Discover card, then yes. If you have a Wells Fargo card, then maybe. If you have an American Express card, then only if you choose The Platinum Card® or the American Express® Gold Card.

Discover lets cardholders choose from more than 150 designs.

Every credit card issuer has its own rules regarding customization. Most major banks and even the occasional credit union will allow you to get a personalized debit card. It’s kind of interesting that this feature is so readily available on debit cards but not credit cards.

See the previous question for a more detailed explanation of each major card issuer’s customization options.

Can I Customize My Debit Card?

Whether you can get a custom debit card depends on the bank or credit union that issues your Visa debit card or ATM card. Your debit card is tied to your checking account whereas an ATM card can only be used at ATMs to withdraw cash.

Many financial institutions offer customized card options, but the rules vary. Some banks may allow you to upload your own photo (pending image review and approval) and others will require you to choose from preset designs.

One way to find out what your bank offers is to log in to online banking and follow the prompts to card services, where you can locate any customization services that may be available.

You can also call the number on the back of your debit card to speak with a representative. You’ll have to provide some identifying information, such as your card number or Social Security number and birthdate, to get detailed information about your card account.

Can an Authorized User Get a Custom Card?

Yes, any authorized cardholder can get a personalized credit card. They can get a replacement card for an existing card or choose their design upon card activation.

Photo of a woman and man online with a credit card

Authorized users can get a customized credit card if the issuer provides custom card options.

Of course, this only applies if the card issuer allows card personalization. See the first FAQ for the options offered by the major issuers.

Credit Cards You Can Customize Aren’t Common

Credit card personalization isn’t widespread among credit card companies. Only Discover lets every cardholder choose from over 150 card designs, whereas other issuers limit the cards that qualify or don’t offer the service at all.

But if you want to stand out from the crowd when you make a transaction, a personalized card is a good way to do it. Or check out some of these sleek metal credit cards that are sure to catch anyone’s eye.
