Key Takeaways
One credit card bill could soon give cardholders four very different ways to pay.
Upgrade’s newest credit card is designed to let cardholders decide how quickly each purchase comes out of their pocket.
With OneCard Essentials, they can pay right away, break a purchase into four payments, stretch it across fixed monthly installments, or carry it on a traditional credit card balance.
Most of the payment options are still being rolled out, so they may not be available when an account is opened. Upgrade says availability may depend on factors including a cardholder’s creditworthiness and account standing.
Renaud Laplanche, Co-Founder and CEO of Upgrade, said in the company’s announcement that OneCard allows consumers to manage both spending and repayment on their own terms.
One Card, Four Ways to Pay
OneCard Essentials will eventually let cardholders pay an amount of their choosing each month, from the minimum due to the full balance.

Cardholders who don’t want a purchase carried on their balance can use Pay Now, which automatically withdraws the purchase amount from their bank account on the day the transaction settles. They will still earn the card’s rewards and receive protection against unauthorized purchases under Visa’s Zero Liability Policy.
The card is also designed to compete with buy now, pay later services.
Upgrade plans to let eligible cardholders divide purchases into four interest-free biweekly payments, although the feature is not yet available and is not guaranteed for every account.
Upgrade also plans to let eligible users turn purchases into fixed monthly installments with no down payment.
Gas, Groceries and Utilities Earn 3% Back
Upgrade isn’t new to credit cards. The company launched an earlier version of OneCard more than four years ago, but OneCard Essentials combines features that had previously been spread across several Upgrade products.
“With OneCard, we are taking the best offerings from every card we’ve had — the ability to pay immediately, flexible payment schedules when needed, and of course maximum rewards,” Laplanche said in the announcement.
OneCard Essentials offers unlimited 3% cash back on eligible purchases at gas stations and grocery stores, as well as on streaming subscriptions and utilities.

Purchases at Target and Walmart do not qualify for the 3% rate. Rewards eligibility also depends on how a merchant codes a transaction, meaning some purchases may not earn the rate consumers expect.
All other eligible purchases earn unlimited 1% cash back. Rewards do not expire as long as the cardholder’s account remains in good standing.
No Annual Fee and Added Visa Benefits
The card has no annual fee. Its purchase APR ranges from 19.99% to 29.99% when an account is opened, with the exact rate based on the applicant’s creditworthiness, according to the card’s disclosures.
In addition to Visa’s Zero Liability Policy, cardholders can access other Visa Signature benefits. Those include travel and emergency assistance services and Visa’s pay-per-use Roadside Dispatch program, which can arrange services such as jump-starts and towing.
Cardholders can also use Upgrade Shopping, which provides eligible customers with offers and discounts from participating merchants. Available merchants and offer terms can change over time.
OneCard Essentials is currently available by invitation only. Upgrade plans to expand the card’s availability through the end of 2026.
