One of Latin America’s biggest banking names is making its U.S. debut. Nu is rolling out a credit card with unlimited 1.5% cash back and a savings account offering 3.50% APY. Customers can sign up now for early access.

The Nu Credit Card has no annual fee and offers unlimited 1.5% cash back on every purchase made with the card. The Nu Account offers a variable yield of 3.50% APY on every dollar as of September 10, and interest is calculated and paid daily on the available balance. Nu’s partner bank, FDIC-insured Lead Bank, holds the deposits.

Nu applied for a national bank charter with the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency last autumn, receiving conditional approval in January. Launching in the U.S. market with a partner bank allows Nu to start serving U.S. customers.

“Since our founding, we have believed that consumer-obsessed digital banking is the future of retail banking globally, and after proving this hypothesis with over 140 million fanatical customers in Latin America, we are excited to start executing our thesis beyond our core region,” said David Vélez, Founder and Chief Executive Officer of Nu.

A Look at the Nu Account

Need to send money to family in Brazil, Mexico, or Colombia? Nu says customers can do it in a few minutes without a transfer fee. The Nu Account also comes with a metal debit card and instant access to funds.

And Nu customers will soon be able to grow their savings yield to 4.50% APY on savings goals up to $10,000 by pairing the Nu Account with the Nu Credit Card and making at least three eligible card transactions in the preceding 34 days.

The Nu Credit Card comes with Mastercard World Elite benefits and a limited-edition metal card.

A Focus on the U.S. Market

Already established in Latin America, Nu is looking to build a U.S. customer base. Nu is the largest private financial institution in Brazil and serves more than 60% of the adult population. Nu is the largest digital bank in Mexico and the fourth-largest financial institution by deposits in Colombia.

“We want to earn the place of being people’s primary banking relationship, and capturing even a small share of the U.S. market will be transformative for our business,” said Cristina Junqueira, Co-Founder and Chief Executive Officer of Nu US.

She explained the appeal of Nu for American customers this way:

“Our customers will enjoy high yield on their account, a metal credit card with unlimited cash back, and fast domestic and international payments, with no fees and in a single beautifully designed app, backed by award-winning support,” Junqueira said.

What is Happening With Nu Global

Separately, Nu Global is a multicurrency digital account in which funds are converted into digital dollars or digital euros, stablecoins pegged to the U.S. dollar and euro. Those balances earn a daily yield of 3.50% APY and 2.20% APY, respectively.

Nu Global customers can use a virtual Mastercard when they spend abroad and send money across more than 35 countries. Nu says connections with Brazil, Colombia, Mexico, and the U.S. are still to come.
