After using your credit card to make a purchase or to withdraw cash, you will need to make at least the minimum requested payment in about 30 days to keep the account in good standing

The fastest way to pay your bill is online or in person. You won’t have to wait on the phone and go through the recorded prompts or speak to a customer service agent, both of which can take a long time.

How You Pay Depends On Your Card Issuer

Be aware that you will not be sending your payments directly to two of the largest credit card companies: Visa and Mastercard. These companies are networks that don’t issue credit cards directly but work with banks and credit unions that provide the funds for the credit line.

You will often see the Visa or Mastercard logo on a credit card issued by a financial institution like Chase or Bank of America. In that case, you will be sending your payment to the underwriting financial institution, not the network.

For some card issuers, including Navy Federal Credit Union, you will need to send the payment to a different address, depending on whether the card uses the Visa or Mastercard network.

But two major credit card networks — American Express and Discoverdo issue their own credit and charge cards. Consequently, if you have cards with them, you will be sending your payments directly to those companies.

Also, know that issuers frequently have several types of credit cards in their portfolio. Unless the cards are business cards rather than personal cards, where and how you make your payments won’t change.

For example, Chase offers several personal credit cards but has only one address where cardholders can send payments. An exception to this rule is Citibank, which has a different address for its Costco branded card.

When Making Payments by Mail

It is very important that you never send cash, whether you use U.S. Postal Service or an alternative carrier such as Federal Express or UPS.

Instead, use a personal or cashier’s check or a money order. Whichever method you use, be sure to write the credit card account number on the check, especially if you have multiple credit cards with the same issuer.

Alternative Payment Methods

In addition to mailing in your payment, using the issuer’s website, and paying over the phone, you may also be able to pay your bill with the following options:

ATM: If you have deposit accounts (such as a savings or checking account) with the same financial institution that issued the credit card, you can pay at the ATM. Insert your bank or debit card into the ATM, then follow the instructions to transfer money from your deposit account to the credit card.

Branch: As with the ATM, if you have deposit accounts with the same financial institution that issued the credit card, you can go into the branch and make payments with the assistance of a teller.

Mobile App: Most credit card issuers offer an app you can download to your mobile device and then make a quick transfer from your bank account to your credit card account.

Western Union: You can also make your payment via Western Union. To do so, you can download the company’s app, add your accounts and make a transfer, or visit one of its storefront locations.

Automatic Bill Pay: If you want to take the work out of the payment process, consider enrolling in your credit card company’s autopay system. Most credit card issuers offer this as an option.

After signing up, you authorize the company to debit your checking account when the payment comes due. You may choose to pay the minimum amount due, a fixed amount, or to cover the entire balance.

The Bottom Line

No matter how you submit your credit card payments, making sure they are posted by the due date and for the correct amount is essential. If you don’t, you almost certainly will be hit with a late fee.

So, if you plan on mailing your check, give yourself plenty of time. It can take a week or even longer for the payment to reach the company.

To ensure the payment is posted as it should be, review your account online. If there are any inaccuracies or delays, contact your credit card issuer immediately.
