Think fast: what do Adam Sandler, the American Express Gold Card, and Janet Jackson all have in common? There’s more than one correct response here. So if you answered that they are all instantly recognizable, or that they’ve helped bring smiles to the faces of people around the world, you wouldn’t be wrong.

But the answer we were looking for is that they were born in 1966, so 2026 marks the completion of their 60th trip around the sun. To celebrate 60 years of the Gold Card bringing cardholders financial flexibility, American Express is rolling out new benefits and enhancements that make using the card even more rewarding.

And while the American Express Gold Card may not have inspired people to start fan clubs the way Sandler and Jackson have, the payment product has been an essential component of many consumers’ financial lives through the decades.

“For 60 years, the Gold Card has evolved alongside how our Card Members actually live,” Lisa Kalhans, Executive Vice President of U.S. Consumer Products at American Express, said in a press release about the card’s anniversary.

American Express sign on building
American Express offers cardholders savings on dining when they pay with the Gold Card at participating eateries.

A Bloomberg report on the card’s new features suggested that — among the different premium cards that American Express offers — many people view the Gold Card as the one that aims to please those who value dining rewards. American Express’s Platinum Card, on the other hand, suits people in the market for more travel benefits from a credit card.

But the distinctions between the two cards may blur somewhat with the announcement of the Gold Card’s upgraded perks.

Cardholders can now earn more points with the Gold Card when they use it on American Express’s travel portal to book prepaid hotels. The summer travel season is right around the corner, and earning more points on hotel stays is one way budget-conscious consumers can stretch their travel budget this year.

The changes may attract more younger consumers to the Gold Card.

“Dining has always been at the heart of the Card, and we’re seeing an even greater desire for travel — especially among younger generations, with 74% of Millennials and Gen Z saying travel is a non-negotiable,” Kalhans said, citing the results of a recent survey of travelers from countries around the world, including Australia, Japan, and the U.S.

Keeping Affordability Front and Center

American Express’s latest updates haven’t left out those consumers who opted for the Gold Card because of the dining rewards it offers. The card already allows cardholders to earn up to $10 in statement credits each month when they use it at establishments such as Five Guys and The Cheesecake Factory.

Now American Express has added more options, including Buffalo Wild Wings, to the list of eateries that help cardholders save.

We recently caught up with Matthew Goldman, Founder of consulting firm Totavi, who told us that credit cards can be much more than a functional tool for many cardholders.

“How you pay in America is part of your identity,” Goldman told us. “People do want to feel special, and they do want to stand out. Brands are focusing on dining credits now, not just travel credits. I think that really speaks to the experience-focused economy.”

Goldman also told us that card companies are responding to what millennials value as they enter their peak spending years.

In addition to the new and enhanced perks American Express has announced for the Gold Card, the company is also offering limited-time deals for the card’s anniversary.

Affordability has been a buzzword in recent months, and American Express likely had the struggles consumers are facing in 2026 in mind when it considered which features to add to the Gold Card.

Not only is the card now helping cardholders save more, but it’s bringing more benefits to market without increasing the card’s $325 annual fee.

That’s good news for those who feared that American Express would charge more for the Gold Card this year after the company added new benefits to the Platinum Card in 2025 and raised the annual fee on that product.

The changes to the Gold Card feature some limited-time offers American Express rolled out for the card’s anniversary. Those extras include a statement credit when people use the Gold Card to purchase a membership to Uber One and specially curated Amex Offers for eligible cardholders.

Kalhans said in the press release that the updates to the Gold Card deliver more of what the company’s cardholders most value, and what makes American Express one of the company’s most well-rounded credit cards.
