Key Takeaways
Mastercard and Bangladesh’s Eastern Bank PLC have joined forces to launch the world’s first biometric metal credit card. The new card stands to appeal to issuers with customers in the market for a credit card that combines enhanced security measures with a sleek, metal design.
The new payment tool allows a cardholder to authenticate their store purchases with just their fingerprint. Removing the need for a cardholder to sign their name or enter a PIN to complete a purchase boosts the security of the transaction.
Bad actors can forge signatures and illegally obtain payment credentials. But replicating a cardholder’s fingerprint may prove to be a much tougher task.
A press release announcing Mastercard’s new card reveals that it makes use of advanced biometric technology to “ensure that only the authorized user can complete the transaction, safeguarding sensitive financial data and setting a new benchmark for secure, premium payment experiences.”
The card, part of Mastercard’s World Elite portfolio, offers additional benefits beyond its security features.
Syed Mohammad Kamal, Country Manager, Bangladesh, Mastercard, said in the release that the card, which is a part of Mastercard’s World Elite portfolio, will offer a plethora of benefits beyond its advanced security qualities.
Those benefits include complimentary stays at luxury hotels, discounted car rentals, and free gourmet meals at leading eateries. Cardholders can also gain complimentary access to exclusive airport lounges via Mastercard’s LoungeKey program.
The card will provide “an elevated experience that reflects the evolving expectations of today’s discerning customers,” Kamal said.
Stopping Identity Theft In Its Tracks
Credit card companies that offer cards with best-in-class security features may attract new customers and hang on to their current customers. Experian issued a report last month that indicated that the most prevalent type of identity theft in 2024 was credit card fraud.
Mastercard, which will equip its new card with identity theft protection, doesn’t offer biometric metal cards in all its markets. But those who closely follow the company know that may change during the second half of the 2020s.
By 2030, the company plans to employ tokenization and biometric authentication so cardholders won’t need to enter card numbers and passwords for online purchases.

Those changes can’t come soon enough for cardholders who’ve experienced fraud on their card accounts.
Mastercard’s new biometric metal card lets cardholders register their fingerprints from wherever it’s most convenient using a kit Eastern Bank PLC provides.
Issuers who are first in line to update their cards to include the latest security features can gain an edge in a competitive card market. Mastercard is confident that their new cards will be a success with cardholders seeking an elevated payment experience.
“This groundbreaking innovation reaffirms Mastercard’s leadership in redefining the future of payments — where cutting-edge security meets seamless convenience,” Kamal said. “By embedding fingerprint authentication into a sleek metal card, Mastercard has set a new benchmark for premium cardholders who demand both sophistication and safety.”
