General Motors revealed the launch of a new credit card and a redesign of its GM Rewards loyalty program that enhances ways consumers can earn and redeem reward points from the company.

The card, officially known as the GM Rewards Mastercard from Barclays US Consumer Bank, comes with benefits aimed at helping cardholders save money on vehicle expenses and gain entry to Instagram-worthy functions.

Ralph Darmo, VP of Loyalty Programs at General Motors, said in a press release that the company is creating exclusive experiences for members such as trackside access to racing events. He also touched on practical ways the card can help members manage their finances.

“Cardmembers can use the new GM Rewards Mastercard to earn GM Rewards points from everyday purchases like food, shopping, and travel,” Darmo said. “And you can redeem GM Rewards points towards your next vehicle, for accessories or features to upgrade your vehicle, and for services.”

The new card features an abundance of opportunities for cardholders to boost the points they can earn through their spending activities. The GM Rewards Mastercard provides cardholders with 30,000 bonus points when they spend at least $1,000 on the card within 90 days of opening it.

The new card provides bonus points to cardholders who meet spending thresholds in the months after they open it.

Cardholders can earn points on each purchase they make with the card, and they can amplify their points balances when they use the card on eligible GM purchases. Consumers can earn unlimited points with the new card.

Mastercard is excited to enter into a partnership with GM and Barclays that offers benefits that align with cardholder lifestyles, said John Levitsky, Co-President, United States for Mastercard, in the release.

“The GM Rewards Mastercard provides convenience and security through the power of our network, while unlocking valuable benefits that enhance the cardmember experience on and off the road,” Levitsky said.”

General Motors and Barclays plan to launch the GM Business Mastercard later this year to help business customers access more rewards and redemption options.

Combatting the Risings Costs of Car Ownership

Recent figures from the University of Michigan’s tracking of consumer sentiment reveals that sentiment is down nearly 30% since January 2025. Uncertainties about the impacts of new trade policies and fears about the rising costs of goods and services have combined to contribute to consumers’ declining economic outlook.

Any programs that businesses introduce to help consumers stretch their dollar further will likely receive an enthusiastic greeting in the marketplace, and that’s particularly true in 2025. Cardholders do not pay a fee to join the GM Rewards program.

General Motors announced a slew of upgrades to its loyalty initiative, including providing cardholders with the ability to transfer points they earn to other GM Rewards participants and redeem points for services, including digital navigation tools.

The cost of car ownership is on the rise for many Americans. But consumers who use GM Rewards can now maximize their vehicle spend by combining their GM Rewards points with dealer and supplier discounts.

“GM has led the U.S. automotive industry in loyalty for a decade, and now we’re rewarding both our new and existing members with easier access to savings opportunities and new ways to engage with us,” Darmo said.
