Everyone wants to enjoy their work and report to an employer that trusts them and values their contributions. Job seekers may struggle to form an accurate picture of what it is like to work for a prospective employer.

But they can draw confidence from reports issued by independent agencies that detail the experiences workers have with their employers.

Fortune recently released its ranking of the 100 Best Companies to Work For in 2025, and a number of credit card issuers are included on the list. Fortune develops its ranking by using an employee survey, which it calls the Trust Index, that asks respondents to assess the workplace culture and impact of leadership at their places of employment.

Several credit card issuers appear in the rankings, including American Express and Synchrony, which both placed in the top five of all companies. Numerous other credit card issuers made Fortune’s list, including Capital One at number 36 and Bank of America at number 53. Card networks Mastercard and Visa came in at numbers 61 and 76, respectively.

While landing on a list of the best places to work can boost a company’s reputation, Fortune highlights that companies that earn its “Great Place to Work Certification” enjoy quantifiable results. The company cites that the stock performances of a leading high-trust company can beat the market average by nearly four times.

Businesses that Fortune certifies as great places to work may also attract more job seekers and enjoy reduced turnover rates

“The 100 Best Companies are more attractive destinations for new hires, with more employees contributing new ideas and giving extra effort to win in an increasingly challenging marketplace,” Fortune wrote on its website.

Synchrony and Amex Lead the Way

The top spot among all credit card issuers on the Fortune list — and nearly the leader among all companies — is Synchrony, which came in second place overall.

A statement on the Fortune landing page for Synchrony highlights the company’s aim to make it “easier for the tens of millions of people who rely on us to access their essential needs and everyday wants with consumer financing that works for them — from their first credit card to a lifetime of flexibility.”

According to Fortune research, only 57% of employees at typical companies in the U.S. say they work at a great place. At Synchrony, that number shoots to 94%. And 94% of Synchrony employees also feel company management is honest and ethical when it comes to business practices.

Employees appreciate working for companies that have a unified culture.

“I love Synchrony!” said a company employee, according to Fortune. “I am very proud to be a part of an amazing company. Our One Synchrony mindset, our culture and benefits sets us apart from other companies.”

American Express is the second highest-ranking credit card issuer on the Fortune list, coming in at number four overall. A whopping 97% of American Express employees said they are proud to tell others where they work and say the company makes new employees feel welcome, Fortune reported.

“Amex cares a lot about the wellbeing and psychological safety of its employees,” the company’s workers told Fortune. “Our parental leave policies are among the best in the U.S. This company cares about developing skills and helping people grow and advance their careers.”

Your company may not have been under consideration for Fortune’s 2025 list, but that doesn’t mean it can’t implement the best practices for companies that Fortune highlights. Improving employee relations can make for a more harmonious workplace, but it can also be a driver for a company’s financial success.

As Fortune so eloquently said in the introduction to their best places to work list: “Profits don’t create great workplaces — it’s the other way around.”
