In a Nutshell: A business executive’s life can feel like a never-ending series of meetings, emails, and crises. Gobundance helps titans of industry balance their lives and become better parents, friends, and business leaders. The organization promotes relationships among members to help them achieve more in their personal and professional lives.

I recently heard a story about the family of a standout high school football player that moved so their son could join another school’s football team. Though the boy excelled on the field at his original school, his family sought a higher level of competition to prepare him for major college football.

Just as iron sharpens iron, spending time interacting with high-performing people can help you improve yourself and reach new levels of success.

Gobundance is a community of high-performing individuals who motivate each other to grow personally and professionally. We caught up with Matt King, Gobundance’s CEO, to learn more about the organization’s efforts to fashion high-impact leaders.

Gobundance started in 2013 as an accountability group for three men. King told us that, although the men didn’t envision Gobundance transforming into a business, the accountability group evolved through the years into a community of 900 members.

“I got involved with the group right around 2013, and one of the founders asked me to help manage one of our events,” King told us. “Over time, I took on a new role with one of the other founders whose family office I still run today, which means I sit on the board and help steer the direction of the ideas around the Gobundance tribe.”

Gobundance offers multiple levels of membership. Elite Membership is for individuals who have a minimum net worth of $2 million. Those with a net worth of $10 million or greater are eligible for a Champion Membership with the organization.

King began managing the Champion division in June of 2022. After a successful stint in that role, he took over the CEO position during the fourth quarter of 2022.

“Taking this position was really a sure bet for me,” King told us. “Gobundance has had a ton of influence and control over me and my life, and they’ve overseen my development and evolution as a human. It made sense for them to promote me to the CEO role because I was a known commodity inside of the community, and it was a lot safer for them to bring me in than it would have been to get someone else.”

Small Groups Promote Meaningful Connections

CEOs wear many different hats, and King is no exception. He oversees Gobundance’s growth opportunities and manages the numerous events the organization hosts. King told us he enjoys coming up with ideas, implementing them, and then analyzing data to determine whether Gobundance’s programs require enhancements.

Gobundance relies on its members to contribute ideas that help the organization grow.

“Gobundance is a peer-based mastermind group that’s led and driven by its members,” King told us. “We have what we call our tribal council — that’s kind of like a board of members — that oversees the decisions and direction of the organization. We use a lot of our members to lead and facilitate things and give presentations on different topics.”

Gobundance believes that human evolution revolves around being surrounded by people who are willing to tell each other what they need to hear. And King told us that what people need to hear isn’t always what they want to hear.

The organization creates an environment where people can be vulnerable, and one way it accomplishes that is by offering experiences that create bonds among members. King told us people who go on epic outdoor adventures together are likely to build a sense of trust that can carry over into business meetings.

Gobundance has nine regions across the U.S. The organization invites members to attend events throughout the year, allowing participants to develop camaraderie. Between in-person events, Gobundance hosts Zoom calls featuring guest speakers who cover topics of interest to members.

Members who seek additional guidance from the Gobundance community can join smaller groups, called Micro Tribes and Gopods. Gobundance supports 100 Micro Tribes.

“Our Micro Tribes are these little sub-tribes that focus on very specific things, such as small business acquisitions, family issues, member health, and religion,” King told us. “A Gopod is an accountability group that meets every single week to go over member goals, struggles, successes, and failures.”

Pillars Point the Way to Success

We all manage stress in different ways. Some people grab their charge card and go on a shopping spree while others turn to exercise or meditation to center their minds. But simply talking with someone you trust can also help you deal with stressful situations.

Gobundance offers separate divisions for men and women. King told us the organization believes that conversations among members of the same sex progress differently than those among groups involving both men and women.

“Conversations among men, when women are not involved, create a deeper level of vulnerability that allows men to open up more,” King told us. “In order to truly create transformation in a member’s life, we need to make sure there are no barriers around discussions. By having a group made up of men, we allow members to share more because they feel like it’s a safe space for them.”

Bucket List Adventures help members connect with one another.

The cumulative net worth of Gobundance’s 900 members is greater than $5.4 billion. King told us members come from all walks of life and include business owners and doctors.

Gobundance promotes six core pillars it believes are essential to living an abundant life. One of the pillars — Bucket List Adventures — posits that shared adventures promote intimacy among members. King told us the organization’s adventures aren’t all extreme physical challenges and can be something as unique as feeding a baby zebra.

Other pillars focus on member health, giving back to local and global communities, building authentic relationships, accountability, and growing passive income.

“Many of us trade our time for money,” King told us. “But we understand that the true way to live financially free is by having income that’s coming in even when you’re just lying in bed. Passive income allows you to build wealth and no longer be dependent on a job for money.”

Bringing Balance to Busy Workers

Many people in the U.S. struggle to maintain a healthy balance of their work and personal lives. Technology ensures that we can always stay connected to work, even when we’re physically out of the office.

King told us that those who sacrifice time with their families in favor of working more may regret it later in life.

“I have yet to meet somebody who, nearing the end of their life, wishes they would have worked more,” King told us. “It’s important that we’re not surrounded by the ghosts of regret at our graves. And the way to do that is to make sure we’re prioritizing all the aspects of our lives.”

Gobundance members share tips and personal anecdotes to help each other balance their lives so they don’t miss family milestones.

Gobundance has had a profound impact on King’s financial life. He was in debt when he joined the organization, but his net worth now exceeds $7 million. King told us many members engage with Gobundance to grow their net worth, but, after joining, they realize they can improve more areas of their lives than just their finances.

Gobundance plans to grow and help more members live richly in the coming year.

“We’re working on a structure that is going to bring Gobundance to members locally on a monthly basis,” King told us. “It will allow members to meet in-person each month in a vulnerable setting so they can have the accountability and transformation they desire for their lives. I’m super excited about that.”
