Although every credit card issuer sets its own approval standards, they all generally want the same types of customers. Thus, your odds of being approved for a credit card will vary more with your credit history than any other factor, including the issuer itself.

Supporting that conclusion, a recent CFPB report found that consumers with superprime and prime credit scores were significantly more likely to be approved for a new credit card than consumers with lower scores:

  • Superprime: 84% Approval Rate
  • Prime: 65% Approval Rate
  • Near-Prime: 43% Approval Rate
  • Subprime: 19% Approval Rate
  • No Credit: 16% Approval Rate

Along those lines, the best way to boost your approval odds with any issuer — other than improving your credit — is to focus on the cards specifically marketed toward your credit type. Of course, while many major issuers cater to a variety of credit types, a few offer cards only to prime or superprime customers.

Discover Credit Card Approval Odds

As the originator of the cash back rewards card, Discover has a legacy to uphold. And its current card lineup fits the bill, including many rewards credit cards for a variety of credit types. All of the issuer’s cards offer both cash back rewards and no annual fee, as well as Discover’s basic card benefits.

Best Discover Cards for Good to Average Credit

Most of Discover’s credit cards have the same general credit range for approval, which the issuer terms as “average to excellent credit.” Numerically, this typically means a FICO Score of around 670 or higher, though your full credit profile will factor into the decision.

Chase Credit Card Approval Odds

One of the pickier issuers on the market, Chase offers a ton of very popular rewards credit cards for prime and superprime customers — but no real options for consumers whose credit scores fall into the fair or limited ranges.

Chase is also very selective about how many new cards you’ve opened, and the issuer’s 5/24 Rule — which requires applicants to have opened fewer than five new credit accounts in the last 24 months — will result in an instant rejection for most Chase credit cards if you’re over the limit.

Best Chase Cards for Excellent Credit

Consumers with excellent credit can qualify for most credit cards, regardless of issuer, but Chase is definitely home to some of the best options, especially for anyone interested in a top-tier travel rewards card. Keep an eye on the annual fees, however, as bigger rewards tend to mean larger fees.

Barclays Credit Card Approval Odds

Although it may not be as ubiquitous in the US credit card space as some of its competitors, Barclays still provides a robust credit card lineup with a number of quality options.

As with Chase and Amex, however, Barclays isn’t interested in credit card customers with near-prime or subprime credit; you’ll generally want at least a good credit score to qualify for a card issued by Barclays.

Best Barclays Cards for Good Credit

A generally positive credit profile and a good credit score can help get you in the door for nearly any Barclays credit card, but reviews suggest that you’ll also want to have a long credit history for the best approval odds with this issuer.

With no purchase rewards, this isn’t the card you pick up for the perks. Instead, the low regular APR — charged year-round for purchases, balance transfers, and cash advances alike — and the balance transfer offer make it obvious that this card is intended for consumers who tend to carry a balance and want to save big on interest fees. Citi Credit Card Approval Odds

The best approval odds for a Citi credit card will come from having excellent credit, which will help you qualify for the issuer’s top-tier rewards cards. A good credit score can still help you snag a midtier card, but only the secured card offers decent approval chances for consumers with fair, poor, or limited credit.

American Express Credit Card Approval Odds

American Express has a robust product line that offers dozens of consumer and business credit cards, including a number of hugely popular rewards credit cards.

Despite this abundance, however, the issuer has nothing to offer consumers with fair or limited credit, instead focusing on applicants with at least a good credit score and positive credit profile.

Best American Express Cards for Excellent Credit

Home of the enviably elite Platinum card, American Express has a number of top-tier card options that are only available to consumers with excellent credit — though many of them have the high annual fees to match their elite status.

Platinum Card® from American Express

The Platinum Card® from American Express is a top-rated travel rewards card that offers 5X Membership Rewards® points for airfare and hotel stays booked through Amex’s travel portal, as well as flights booked directly with the carrier.

American Express Platinum Card

  • Earn 5X points per $1 on flights & hotels booked through Amex Travel
  • Receive up to $200 in Uber credits per year
  • Receive a $200 airline fee credit each year

American Express Business Platinum Card®

The American Express Business Platinum Card® is nearly identical to its consumer counterpart, offering the same 5X Membership Rewards® points on flights and hotels booked through amextravel.com. The business credit card doesn’t offer the 5X points on airfare booked through the carrier, but it does provide 1.5X points per dollar on purchases over $5,000.

Amex Business Platinum Card®

  • Earn 5X points per $1 spent on flights and hotels booked through amextravel.com
  • Earn 1.5X points per $1 on purchases of $5,000 and up
  • Receive up to 75,000 bonus points for meeting spending requirements

Another variation from the consumer version is the annual fee; you’ll pay just $450 for the business card. You’ll still get many of the same travel perks, however, including hotel elite status, airport lounge access, and annual airline fee credits.

Best American Express Cards for Good Credit

Good credit is the minimum requirement to get in the door with most American Express consumer credit cards, and you’ll want both a good credit score and a healthy credit history to receive the best odds of approval.

Blue Cash Preferred® Card from American Express

The Blue Cash Preferred® Card from American Express is by far the best cash back card on the market for grocery rewards, with cardholders earning 6% cash back on up to $6,000 in groceries each year.

Amex EveryDay® Preferred Credit Card

The Amex EveryDay® Preferred Credit Card is basically the rewards points version of the Blue Cash Preferred card, providing 3X Membership Rewards® points per dollar on up to $6,000 in groceries each year. Its secondary category varies, however, offering 2X points per dollar at gas stations, but not department stores.

Amex EveryDay® Preferred Credit Card

  • Earn 3X points per $1 spent at US supermarkets on up to $6,000 in purchases per year
  • Earn 2X points per $1 spent at US gas stations
  • Pay a $95 annual fee

US Bank Credit Card Approval Odds

US Bank’s plethora of credit cards may not be as well-known as those of banks like Chase or Amex, but the issuer’s rewards cards definitely hold their own in the battle for the best card.

Applicants with at least good credit can find a number of competitive cards offering points or cash back, and the bank also has a quality secured card option for consumers who need to establish or build their credit profiles.

Best US Bank Cards for Good Credit

US Bank’s top-tier rewards credit cards are gaining popularity in the broader market, offering bonus rewards in under-served categories like mobile wallet purchases, home utilities, and electronics stores. Some options may require an existing US Bank relationship, while others are open to applicants regardless of membership.

Best US Bank Card for Poor or Limited Credit

As is usually the case, US Bank’s secured card has the best odds of approval for consumers with poor or limited credit. You’ll need to make a cash deposit to open and maintain the account, but the deposit is fully refundable so long as you don’t default on your account.

Synchrony Bank Credit Card Approval Odds

Synchrony Bank is known primarily as the main issuer of retailer co-branded credit cards, offering cards from a huge range of popular merchants, from Lowe’s to Amazon and most chains in between. The bank also issues a few non-retail co-branded cards, including the CareCredit credit card for medical bills.

With more than 100 different stores and co-branded credit cards, it’s easy to assume that there’s a card for nearly any credit type — and you’d be correct. No matter what kind of credit you have, there’s likely a Synchrony card that offers a decent chance of approval.

Best Synchrony Bank Cards for Good Credit

When it comes to store credit cards, having good credit is typically enough to qualify for pretty much any card you like, especially if you have a fairly long credit history, as well. Make sure you investigate the card’s benefits carefully, however, as few store co-branded cards can truly compete with the broader credit card market.

Marvel Mastercard®

The Marvel Mastercard® is one of the few cards that provides bonus rewards on entertainment, offering 3% cash back on things like amusement park purchases and digital media. Cardholders also earn 3% cash back on dining, all with no annual fee.

  • Earn 3% cash back on dining, select entertainment, and eligible Marvel merchandise purchases
  • Earn unlimited 1% cash back on all other purchases
  • Pay no annual fee

Beyond the card’s inclusive purchase rewards, the Marvel Mastercard® also offers a small sign-up bonus, as well as a host of perks for the Marvel devotee, including discounts and free shipping on MarvelShop.com purchases, as well as special discounts on Marvel Unlimited and Marvel digital comics.

Lowe’s Advantage Card

The Lowe’s Advantage Card offers a flat 5% discount at the register on every purchase, instantly reducing your out-of-pocket costs. Cardholders can choose special financing instead of the discount on purchases of $299 or more.

Lowe’s Advantage Card

  • Receive 5% off qualifying purchases at checkout when you use your card
  • Enjoy special financing on purchases of $299 or more
  • Pay no annual fee

Be aware that the special financing offers include deferred interest that will kick in if you fail to pay your full financed balance before your promotional period ends, so be sure to plan accordingly to avoid hefty fees.

Best Synchrony Bank Cards for Fair or Average Credit

The vast majority of store credit cards only require fair or average credit to qualify, which opens up a ton of options for consumers looking to build credit with a store card. Watch out for super high APRs and deferred-interest financing deals.

TJX Rewards® Card

The TJX Rewards® Card offers a competitive 5% in rewards on TJC Companies brands, including T.J. Maxx and Marshalls, both in-store and online.

TJX Rewards® Card

  • Earn 5X points per $1 at T.J.Maxx, Marshalls, HomeGoods, and Sierra Trading Post
  • Receive $10 Reward for every 1,000 points
  • Pay no annual fee

The card also comes with an extra incentive for new cardholders in the form of a sign-up bonus 10% off coupon good on the first online or in-store purchase made with the card.

Best Synchrony Bank Cards for Poor or Limited Credit

Although store credit cards tend to be easier to obtain than open-loop cards, there are a limited number of stores whose co-branded cards will accept poor-credit applicants. Your best odds of approval will still require at least fair credit, but these cards are reported to occasionally approve consumers with low credit scores.

Amazon.com Store Card

The Amazon.com Store Card provides special financing on orders of $149 or more to all cardholders, but it’s Prime members who get the most out of the card, earning 5% cash back on Amazon.com purchases.

Amazon.com Store Card

  • Receive special financing on eligible Amazon.com orders of $149 or more made with your card
  • Amazon Prime members also get 5% cash back on Amazon purchases
  • Pay no annual card fee (Prime fee may apply)

If you’re going to take advantage of the card’s special financing, be sure to pay off your entire purchase before the end of the promotional period or you’ll be stuck paying deferred interest on the full amount.

Old Navy Credit Card

The Old Navy Credit Card offers 5X points per dollar on purchases made at Old Navy stores, but it also can be used for purchases with any other Gap Inc. brand. You’ll get a $5 Reward for every 500 points, making for a nice 5% return.

Old Navy Credit Card

  • Earn 5X points per dollar on purchases at Old Navy and other Gap Inc.-brand purchases
  • Reach Navyist status by earning 5,000 points
  • Pay no annual fee

One thing to keep in mind with this card is that rewards are capped at $250 per billing cycle. Rewards earned beyond the monthly cap will be rolled over into the next billing cycle.

Improve Your Odds By Building Your Credit

As convenient as it would be to say, “These are the credit card companies that have bad approval odds, and these are the issuers with good approval odds” — that’s simply not the reality.

At the end of the day, your chances of being approved for a given credit card depend more upon the credit bureaus and the individual credit card issuers, as your credit scores and history will be the pivotal factor.

In other words, if you have bad credit, your odds of being approved for most credit cards will be low. If you have excellent credit, your approval odds will be high. Therefore, the best thing you can do to ensure good approval chances is to improve your credit score.

On the plus side, you can use a new credit card account to help build credit, even if that card isn’t the best option on the market. Be sure to pay your bill on time each month, since your payment history is the biggest part of your FICO credit score. You should also maintain low utilization rates and watch your debt-to-income ratio.

(Remember that some products, such as your debit card or a prepaid card, won’t help you build credit. A debit card doesn’t actually represent a line of credit, so it won’t report to the credit bureaus.)

If you’re ever unsure of your chances of being approved for a certain card or by a particular credit card issuer, one solution may be to check for pre-approval credit card offers. Most major card companies offer pre-approval, which uses a soft credit pull to get an idea of your qualifications. This is the same method used by many third-party sites, like Credit Karma, that offer approval odds for specific cards.

Keep in mind that a pre-approved credit card offer is not a credit card application, nor is being pre-approved a guarantee that you’ll be approved when you apply. Pre-approved credit card offers simply mean you meet the basic qualifications; your credit score, history, and income will still factor into the approval decision when you fill out the full credit card application.
