FAQs & Methodology

Best American Express Cards for Extended Warranties

As a general policy, eligible American Express cards offer up to one additional year of coverage beyond the original manufacturer’s warranty for covered purchases. The policy applies to warranties of five years or less for covered purchases made in the United States.

American Express rolled out a new extended warranty program for purchases made on or after January 1, 2020.

1. The Platinum Card® from American Express

Platinum Card® from American Express

The Platinum Card® from American Express offers two extended warranty programs: One for New York State, and one for the rest of the United States. Coverage extends for one additional year beyond the manufacturer’s warranty of five years or less.

However, the New York State program limits coverage to a period matching what is offered in the manufacturer’s warranty if it is less than one year. Both programs limit coverage to $10,000 per covered purchase and $50,000 per year.

2. American Express® Gold Card

American Express® Gold Card

The American Express® Gold Card provides the same extended warranty programs as does the issuer’s Platinum Card. The extended warranty covers losses of up to $10,000 per purchase and $50,000 per year for multiple losses.

You get one additional year of coverage added to a manufacturer’s warranty of five years or less. For New York residents, the extended warranty matches manufacturer’s warranties of one year or less.

3. American Express® Green Card

American Express® Green Card

The American Express® Green Card has the same top-tier extended warranty arrangements as the issuer’s Platinum and Gold cards. This means you get an extra year of coverage on top of that provided by manufacturer’s warranties of up to five years.

If you live in New York, the extended coverage doubles that of manufacturer’s warranties of less than one year. The coverage limits are $10,000 per covered item and $50,000 per year.

Best Bank of America Cards for Extended Warranties

Unfortunately, Bank of America does not fully disclose its extended warranty terms and conditions until you receive your card. Therefore, the publicly available information from this issuer is limited.

We advise that you carefully review the benefits information you receive when your Bank of America card arrives in the mail.

No surprises here — the Chase Freedom Unlimited® card has the same extended warranty plan as those for the Sapphire cards. That’s one additional year of coverage when the manufacturer’s warranty is three years or less. Your coverage limits are $10,000 for an item and $50,000 for the account.

Note that coverage is secondary to any existing extended warranty or service contract that you have purchased. Only repairs completed by an authorized facility are covered.

Best Citi Cards for Extended Warranties

We applaud Citi for making available online all the details regarding its standard extended warranty program. The program covers purchases made with a Citi credit card and/or ThankYou Points.

Exclusions include motorized vehicles, products and services not covered by a manufacturer’s warranty, used items, antiques, real estate, plants, live animals, and items purchased for resale, commercial use, or professional use. You have 180 days from the loss date to complete your claim submission.

13. Citi Prestige® Credit Card

Citi Prestige® Credit Card

The Citi Prestige® Credit Card comes with Citi’s standard extended warranty that provides an additional 24 months of warranty coverage. Coverage commences after the manufacturer’s warranty and any purchased extended warranties expire, up to seven years from the purchase date.

The extended warranty covers the lesser of the cost to repair/replace the item, the purchase price, or the amount charged to the credit card. Coverage is capped at $10,000 per item.

14. Citi PremierSM Card

Citi Premier Card

The Citi PremierSM Card offers the same extended warranty on the Prestige card. That’s a good thing because the Citi extended warranty covers an additional 24 months after the expiration of the manufacturer’s warranty and any purchased extended warranties.

Your losses are covered up to $10,000 and up to seven years after purchase. The manufacturer’s warranty must be five years or less.

15. Citi® / AAdvantage® Platinum Select® World Elite™ Mastercard®

Citi® / AAdvantage® Platinum Select® World Elite™ Mastercard®

If you guessed that the Citi® / AAdvantage® Platinum Select® World Elite™ Mastercard® offers the standard extended warranty program, you’re right. That means 24 months of additional coverage up to seven years from the purchase date. The maximum claim allowed is $10,000/item.

The extended warranty will be voided for items that have not received appropriate care or service, recalled items, product defects, and natural disasters.

How Do Extended Warranties Work?

The reason you exercise a warranty is that you’ve encountered a covered loss on a purchased item. “Loss” is a general term meaning malfunction of the purchased item that requires repair, replacement, or reimbursement.

Typically, the following conditions must be met before an extended warranty takes effect:

  1. The credit card must offer an extended warranty.
  2. You must make the purchase with the credit card or with points from the credit card.
  3. The purchase must be covered by the warranty. This usually means property used for your household, for your business, or as a gift.
  4. A covered loss must match the coverage offered by the original manufacturer’s warranty.
  5. The loss is covered only until the extended warranty expires.
  6. Any exceptions in the original manufacturer’s warranty also apply, as well as any additional exceptions specified by the card issuer. Typical exceptions include loss due to physical damage, alterations, improper use, power surges, natural disaster, and many more. Also, certain items won’t be covered and might include living things, consumables, perishables, land, motorized vehicles, or buildings.
  7. The extended warranty may exclude items purchased as inventory or for resale, professional use, or commercial use.
  8. The extended warranty may exclude items covered by an unconditional satisfaction guarantee.
  9. The issuer will usually set a maximum coverage amount per item and limit the coverage to an amount no greater than the original purchase price. There may be an aggregate coverage limit on multiple claims.
  10. If the item is to be repaired, those repairs must be valid, reasonable, and executed by an authorized repair facility.
  11. Certain costs may be excluded, such as shipping, installation, handling, rebates, and other service fees.
  12. You can’t assign the extended warranty to another person.
  13. You might lose coverage if you cancel the credit card or use the purchased item in the commission of a crime.

If you need to file a claim, the general procedure is for you to contact the card issuer, usually by phone, within a set period following the loss. For instance, to file a claim for a Citi Prestige® Credit Card extended warranty, you call 1-866-506-5222. The card issuer will ask you to fill out a claim notice and to provide proof of loss by the specified deadline.

This proof of loss may include the original purchase receipt, a copy of the original manufacturer’s warranty and/or any purchased service contract, a photograph of the item, and/or a completed repair estimate form.

If you’ve properly jumped through all the hoops, you should receive your claimed benefit within a defined period. Payment may be capped if you were paying for your purchase in installments.

Which Credit Card Has the Best Extended Warranty?

The winner is Citi. It is the only issuer that offers an extended warranty with two additional years of coverage.

The manufacturer’s warranty can have a term of up to five years, meaning you can receive up to seven years of coverage. That also beats the competition.

Furthermore, unlike the extended warranty programs of other issuers that cap the total amount covered for the account to one year, the Citi program has no such limits. Other programs typically cap total or annual coverage at $50,000.

Extended Warranties by Issuer

Note that on September 22, 2019, Citi ended its extended warranty program for some of its credit cards. This was part of a substantial scaling back of Citi credit card benefits.

However, the top cards, like the Citi Prestige® Credit Card, continue to offer an extended warranty.

The least impressive extended warranty programs involve manufacturer warranties of less than one year. That is, the extended warranties of cards like the Bank of America® Cash Rewards and Capital One® Venture® Rewards Credit Card only double the number of covered months for short warranties.

More specifically, these cards will only add three months to three-month manufacturer warranties. That’s pretty puny when other cards always provide at least one additional year of coverage.

We should point out that New Yorkers who use Amex cards with extended warranties also have to put up with the matching extended warranty coverage when the manufacturer’s warranty is less than one year. The other 49 states receive a full year of extended coverage no matter how short the manufacturer’s warranty.

Do All Amex Cards Offer Extended Warranties?

American Express overhauled its benefit programs on January 1, 2020. The result is the addition of trip interruption and cancellation coverage to premium Amex cards, but the removal of extended warranty coverage from Amex consumer cards that charge no annual fee.

Amex Logo

American Express scaled back its extended warranty coverage from two years to one and completely removed it from cards with no annual fee.

The three Amex cards we reviewed here, such as the Platinum Card® from American Express, continue to offer the standard extended warranty program. However, the standard program scaled back the additional coverage period from two years to one.

Thus, Amex cards ceded the high ground on extended warranties to Citi cards. If you consider extended warranty benefits especially important, you may want to reconsider getting an Amex card in favor of a Citi card.

This illustrates a larger point: Credit card issuers are forever tinkering with the benefits they offer. With little notice this year, a card like the American Express® Green Card shed benefits, such as returns protection, whereas the Platinum Card® from American Express retained this benefit.

In other words, you need to stay on top of benefit changes, not only by the issuer but also by individual cards. For instance, you should know that, while the Citi PremierSM Card continues to offer an extended warranty, the Citi® Double Cash Card no longer does.

Why do credit card issuers like Citi do this? Well, benefits are expensive, and cards need to generate enough revenue to make them profitable.

Issuers constantly assess their costs and evaluate which benefits are valued most by their customers. They may have to sacrifice some less popular benefits to save highly valued ones. We can call it Citi’s Choice.

Ranking Methodology

Our list of the best credit cards for extended warranties evaluates the individual policies for credit card issuers that still offer extended warranty protection. The rankings are based on coverage limits, warranty terms, the claims process, and overall cardholder satisfaction.

CardRates reviews undergo a thorough editorial integrity process to ensure that content is not compromised by advertiser influence.
